Bequests
Dotha Bushnell Hillyer, The Bushnell's founder and original benefactor, established The Bushnell's endowment fund by making a gift through her will. Without her vision and generosity, The Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts would not exist today.
Year after year, the majority of planned gifts made to charities are charitable bequests, that is, gifts written into a will. Gifts to charity written into a will, or added through a codicil to your will, are subtracted from your estate before taxes are computed. If you have not written a will, it is in your best interest to work with your attorney to do so as it is the only way in which you can direct how your wealth and property will be used in the future. And, gifts made by will provide a lasting testimony to you, your generosity and beliefs.
Types of Bequests
The Bushnell would gratefully receive your notification of any of the following types of bequests:
- an outright bequest of a specific dollar amount
- a residuary bequest of the remainder of your estate after all other obligations are met
- a contingent bequest, in which The Bushnell becomes the beneficiary only if the named beneficiary is unable to accept the bequest
- a bequest of specific assets, including securities, life insurance, real estate tangible personal property, and the remainder (or a portion thereof) of your retirement plan
