Dr. Elliot Eisner to speak to school leaders, teachers

HARTFORD, Conn., September 26, 2002 - The Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts will present a lecture and panel discussion featuring famed education expert Dr. Elliot Eisner. Eisner's lecture entitled "The Future of Educational Assessment: Responding to the No Child Left Behind Legislative Mandates" will take place Monday, October 14, 2002 from 9 a.m. to noon in The Bushnell's Belding Theater. The lecture is part of a professional development session and is presented in collaboration with Regional School District 15 (Middlebury and Southbury Schools). And .2 CEU points will be awarded for those in attendance.

Eisner's lecture will be followed by a panel discussion featuring Dr. John Feierabend (National Center for the Arts in Early Childhood Education at the University of Hartford), Dr. William Glass (Acting Superintendent of Danbury Public Schools), Dr. Sally Reis (Neag Center for Gifted Education and Talent Development at the University of Connecticut) and Dr. Betty Sternberg (Associate Commissioner at the Connecticut Department of Education).
About Dr. Elliot Eisner Since 1965, Elliot W. Eisner has been professor of education and art at Stanford University where he is known for his scholarship in three fields: arts education, curriculum studies, and educational evaluation. His research interests focus on the development of aesthetic intelligence and the use of critical methods from the arts in studying and improving educational practice. Dr. Eisner has lectured throughout the world and has published more than 15 books, including The Enlightened Eye: Qualitative Inquiry and the Enhancement of Educational Practice, which explores the uses of critical methods from the arts in studying and describing schools, classrooms and teaching processes. Dr. Eisner is the recipient of numerous awards for his work, including the Palmer O. Johnson Memorial Award from the American Educational Research Association, a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship, and a Fulbright Fellowship. Professor Eisner has served as president of the National Education Association, the International Society of Education through Art, the American Research Association and is currently president-elect of the John Dewey Society.
