At 800 miles long and averaging less than 70 miles wide, Baja is one of the longest peninsulas in the world, and the Sea of Cortez the world's largest deep gulf. These two facts make the area a paradise for adventure travelers.
An up-close look at the desert reveals over 3,000 species of plants and an amazing number of animals. Coyotes and road runners are to be expected, but Baja is also home to mule deer, mountain lions, bighorn sheep and antelope, to name a few. Many reptile and bird species inhabit the peninsula as well.
In addition to the adventure-related activities, the area is rich in history. The early natives left picture books of their ancient lifestyles painted on stone, and many of the Jesuit missions are still standing.
In 1975, future filmmaker John Holod crossed the Baja peninsula by motorcycle. Today, he retraces his steps by RV for the adventure of a lifetime. Holod has been a wildlife guide, a country music guitarist and singer, an internationally recognized photojournalist and more. A native of Detroit, he has lived in Colorado, Hawaii and Switzerland, and has traveled extensively in North America, Europe, Cuba and Eastern Bloc countries, usually on motorcycles and more recently in a motor home. As a boy of 11, he made his first travelogue film, in Super 8, mostly shooting from the back of his father's motorcycle on a trip from Detroit to the 1962 World's Fair in New York.
