About Paul Winter - Award-winning saxophonist, bandleader, composer, explorer of the world's musical traditions and founder of Living Music and the Paul Winter Consort, Paul Winter has been motivated for the past 30 years by the vision of a musical-ecological community, and has followed a steady course towards his unique "earth music," a vital celebration of the creatures and cultures of the whole earth.
Winter's musical realm has embraced the traditions of many of the world's cultures, interweaving widely diverse instruments and elements with the extraordinary voices from what he refers to as "the greater symphony of the Earth," including wolves, whales, eagles and several dozen other species of "wilderness musicians."
When Winter was touring with his jazz sextet in the early 1960s, he developed a close relationship with the musical community of Brazil and a growing interest in the natural world and voices of the earth. He decided to move into a broader realm of music and explore a richer texture of sound. To this end, he formed he Paul Winter Consort in 1967.
The Consort became one of the earliest exponents of world music, combining elements from various African, Asian and South American cultures with jazz. The Paul Winter Consort has evolved with time, and has featured such performers as David Darling, Paul McCandless, Ralph Towner and Glen Moore.
