Navah Perlman joins Moscow State Radio Symphony Orchestra

The Moscow State Radio Symphony Orchestra, featuring pianist Navah Perlman, will perform at The Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts' Mortensen Hall on Friday, January 16, 2004 at 8:00 p.m. as part of the Webster Classical Series. The program will be Rachmaninoff's well-known Symphony No. 2 and Piano Concerto No. 2 conducted by Paval Sorokin. About Navah Perlman Navah Perlman, daughter of famed violinist Itzhak Perlman, has established herself as one of the most poetic and admired pianists of her generation. Ms. Perlman began her piano studies at age six and later attended the Juilliard School. She continued to make orchestral and recital appearances while studying at Brown University where she earned an honors degree in Art History. Ms. Perlman has appeared with several North American orchestras including the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Toronto Symphony, and Philadelphia Orchestra. Her international engagements have included performances with the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra, the Israel Philharmonic and the New Japan Philharmonic.

About the Moscow State Radio Symphony Orchestra At the direction of former Soviet Leader Leonid Brezhnev, the Moscow State Radio Symphony Orchestra was formed in 1978 for the benefit of Russian citizens. The Orchestra broadcasted weekly programs from the symphonic repertoire of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. The performances of the Orchestra expanded to include film work and television soundtracks for Russia, America and parts Europe. In 1980, the Orchestra created a major subscription series of 36 weeks of concerts in Moscow's Tchaikovsky Hall, and it has continued successfully since it premier season.

Under the stewardship of general director Anatoly Nemudrov, the Moscow State Radio Symphony Orchestra has played in most of the world's capitals, including London, Madrid, Rome, Tokyo, and Sydney. At the invitation of President Boris Yeltsin, the Orchestra performed at the Kremlin Palace with Moscow Classical Ballet. In addition to their international concert and recording schedule for television, radio and film, Nemudrov and the Orchestra have developed a comprehensive and extensive educational program to develop young audiences in Russia in experiencing and understanding the symphony and choral repertoire.

About Maestro Paval Sorokin Paval Sorokin, Principal Conductor for the Orchestra, studied piano and conducting at the Moscow State Conservatory. While studying at the Conservatory, Sorokin was the Concertmaster of the Bolshoi Symphony Orchestra from 1983-1987. He was then invited to continue his education at the Paris National Conservatory for two years in the Symphony Conducting Division and then study as a Fellow with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. In 1989, Sorokin was the winner of the Competition of the Bolshoi Theatre and, today, is one of the leading conductors of the Bolshoi. In 1998, Sorokin was awarded the title "Merited Artist of Russia."
