The Secret Life of Bees, which served is inspiration for the 2008 star-studded movie of the same title, begins on a peach farm in South Carolina, in the heart of the Civil Rights Movement, where young white Lily Owens searches for the truth about her mother’s life and death. She befriends the defiant and fierce-hearted black housekeeper Rosaleen, her “stand in” mother. When Rosaleen is jailed, Lily finds a way to free her and, together, they flee to the town of Tiburon, a name she found among her mother’s few possessions. They wind up living in a household alive with the energy of three strong, black, bee-keeping women and the life-sized Black Madonna who presides over the parlor. Exploring themes of maternal loss and betrayal, guilt and forgiveness, and a young woman’s independence, Lily discovers the real meaning of family.
