A True Story About Success Against All Odds On Stage at The Bushnell

Lemon Andersen’s memoir, The Beautiful Struggle comes to life as part of The Bushnell’s Literature to Life series.

Hartford, CT – November 14, 2008 – On Monday, December 1st at 7:00 p.m., The Bushnell, in collaboration with New York City’s American Place Theatre, will present a live theatrical adaption of Lemon Andersen’s jarring coming-of-age memoir, The Beautiful Struggle in Autorino Great Hall.  Bear witness to the inspirational true story of how the critically acclaimed poet (Def Poetry Jam/HBO) found passion and purpose amidst the most influential and prevalent cultural movement of our time – hip hop.  The Beautiful Struggle is part of The Bushnell’s Literature to Life series, sponsored by SBM Charitable Foundation, Inc.

Tickets for The Beautiful Struggle are on sale now and can be purchased by visiting The Bushnell Box Office at 166 Capitol Avenue in Hartford or by calling (860) 987-5900. Tickets may also be purchased online at www.bushnell.org. Groups of 10 or more should call (860) 987-5959.  Tickets are $30.00.

Born to two parents addicted to heroin, Andersen’s life was a struggle from the start.  Before long he found himself sucked into the drug world as well and began dealing crack cocaine as a teen.  After finally landing in prison Andersen’s future didn’t seem to be a bright one, but after discovering his pension for spoken word he soon became a notable on the New York poetry slam scene, moving on to TV, Broadway and, eventually, a performance on the Tony Awards.
