Learn About Life Growing Up A Slave at The Bushnell

Literature to Life series presents stirring slave narratives

 March 31, 2008, 7:00 p.m.

Hartford, CT – March 4, 2008 – The Bushnell, in collaboration with New York City’s American Place Theatre, brings to life the transcribed narratives of slaves in Growing Up A Slave, in the Autorino Great Hall on March 31 at 7:00 p.m.  Experience the life of a slave through the dramatic accounts of three characters as they tell of their food and eating habits, clothing, religious and superstitious beliefs, music, the auction block and the dire consequences faced by runaways. Growing Up A Slave is a part of The Bushnell’s Literature to Life series supported by SBM Charitable Foundation, Inc.

Tickets for Growing Up A Slave are on sale now and can be purchased by visiting The Bushnell Box Office at 166 Capitol Avenue in Hartford or by calling (860) 987-5900. Tickets may also be purchased online at www.bushnell.org. Groups of 10 or more should call (860) 987-5959.  Tickets are $25.00.

Unlike other performances in the Literature to Life series, Growing Up A Slave is not based on one specific book or play.  The verbatim text is derived from slave narratives transcribed by the Federal Writers' Project in the 1930s.  Throughout these true stories, the spiritual resources of these oppressed people pulsate. The human spirit triumphs.  Professor Mary Patrice Erdmansn of Central Connecticut State University, author of The Grasinski Girls will provide a preshow lecture.
