The Promenade Gallery began in 1973 in the outer lobby area of Mortensen Hall. The mission of the gallery has been to showcase the work of Connecticut artists. There have also been occasional interpretive exhibits, related to performances on the stage, as well as an annual high school student art exhibit. The gallery has also mounted exhibits related to the history of The Bushnell, including an extensive exhibit related to the Hall's 75th anniversary in 2005.

In 2005, The Bushnell entered into a relationship with The New Britain Museum of American Art, and began exhibiting loaned artwork in both the Promenade Gallery and throughout the center.
